Jainism - The Shraman culture

Basically two distinct religious traditions existed in ancient India. These are known as Vedic (believers in God as the creator, destroyer and sustainer of the world and our experiences) and Shraman who do not agree with the role of God as creator and the ultimate cause of everything. Shraman tradition propagates self effort ( Shram) for all worldly and transcendental experiences /attainments. Jainism and Buddhism are the two surviving religious streams of Shraman tradition. Jainism is the oldest Shraman practices even before Mahavira (24th Jain Tirthanker).
